This creamy green onion dip is like the grown up version of the stuff you make with a packet. It’s got all the same flavors, but as the homemade version, it is elevated in both taste and presentation. It takes under 10 minutes to pull it all together, and is my go-to easy appetizer that leaves guests asking for more!
Something about summer always has me desiring simple, easy, and fresh recipes. I don’t want to haul out a food processor, or stand over the stove for hours (or even minutes! I live in Arizona and it gets HOT!) You’ll find none of that here! This creamy dip is an elevated version of those dips where you mix a dip packet with a container of sour cream, and it only takes a few extra minutes to pull together. It looks sophisticated, tastes like I’m eating a fancy sour cream and onion dip, and is an excuse to open a fresh bag of potato chips (I keep them stocked in an extra bedroom closet for when I need a quick appetizer).
This easy green onion dip recipe would make an excellent addition to your next party, or game day. Keep reading to learn what you need to make this flavorful dip.
Creamy Green Onion Dip Ingredients
This flavorful dip only calls for a handful of fresh ingredients. These are simple ingredients that I typically have in my pantry making it an amazing appetizer when I need something last minute. For quantities and detailed instructions, you can check out the recipe card below.
Sour Cream/Plain Greek Yogurt/Labne
You can use a variety of options for the cream base here. I find that in dips like this where there’s so much flavor going on, you can get away with switching up the dairy base without too much notice. That said, I usually make this with full fat plain Greek yogurt. Use whatever base you prefer!
Green Onions
You’ll need 5 fresh green onions (scallions) for this recipe. The green onions get lightly sautéed in a pan with some olive oil, and it helps to take away a bit of the raw onion bite.
Fresh Parsley
Fresh parsley provides a delicious herby flavor here. It is sautéed with the green onions to help it mellow in flavor a bit. While parsley is a traditional flavor in green onion dip, you could certainly swap this for other fresh herbs.
Olive Oil
The onion and parsley sauté in a bit of olive oil to turn them into a chunky sauce that gets poured over the dairy base.
Onion Powder
A little bit of onion powder helps to flavor the dairy base here.
Lemon Juice
This helps to cut the richness of the dairy base with some brightness.
Fresh Garlic Clove (or Garlic Powder)
A single clove of raw garlic is grated into the dairy base to provide some flavor.
Salt & Black Pepper
To season both the dairy base, and the green onion topping.
Creamy Green Onion Dip, Step by Step
Add your 2 cups of sour cream, plain Greek yogurt, or Labne to a large bowl. Add in 1 grated garlic clove (I use a microplane), 2 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp onion powder, ½ tsp of salt and a few cracks of black pepper. Give this mixture a good stir.
Heat a small skillet over medium low heat. Add 1/4 cup olive oil, 5 chopped green onions, 3 tbsp parsley and a pinch of salt. Stir the mixture and let it sizzle. Once it starts sizzling, saute it for 2-4 minutes stirring occasionally. The green onion should turn bright green.
Transfer the creamy base to a serving bowl, and then use the back of a spoon to smooth it, and make some large swoops across the top. Spoon the green onion mixture on top of the creamy base. It will pool up a bit in the swoops you created making for beautiful presentation. Serve at room temperature.
You could serve this with tortilla chips, pita chips, raw vegetables (like carrot sticks, bell peppers, or celery sticks), or (my favorite) plain potato chips.
Store any leftover dip in an airtight container (and do your best to not eat them for breakfast the next morning).
